OUR TREATMENT & WEB INFO FOR VEINS  HAS CHANGED please visit the updated information at

WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS? Varicose veins are bulging, painful veins that appear in the upper and lowers legs, ankles and feet. These weak veins do not allow blood to flow smoothly form your lower extremities back to the heart. If left untreated they can lead to venous insufficiency, leg/skin ulcerations, skin discoloration. They can also lead to thrombosis and blockages in the deeper leg veins. Varicose Veins are usually treated with Endovenous Ablation Therapy and treatment is covered by many insurance plans*

WHAT ARE SPIDER VEINS? Spider veins are much smaller than varicose veins. They appear close to the surface of the skin and are usually red or purple. They are the capillaries that have weakened and appear like a spider web. They are best treated with Sclerotherapy. They are not a medical concern. Each session is approximately 15-45 minutes.*

WHAT FACTORS CAN INCREASE RISKS FOR VARICOSE VEINS? Family history, increased age, pregnancy, overweight, Sitting or standing for long periods of time can all increase your risk for developing varicose veins. You may develop painful or itchy legs, skin discoloration along with swelling, throbbing or heaviness in your feet. This occurs because the one way valves that help blood flow from your have now become weakened and blood flow in the opposite direction.*

WHAT TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE?When conservative measure such as compression stockings do not help, medical treatment options available are as follows:

1) ENDOVENOUS ABLATION THERAPY : A small incision is made near the vein, A catheter device which uses laser or radiofrequency is moved into the vein. This is performed under ultrasound guidance to allow the physician to assure the device is within the vein. Heat is then emitted which causes the vein to close off. You are awake during the procedure, the skin is numbed with a local anesthetic and there is no downtime. The treatment takes 20-30 minutes and you can return to work the next day (see video below)*

2) AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY: For smaller varicose veins closer to the surface of the skin, the physician will make a small cut close to the skins surface. Unlike Endovenous Ablation Therapy, there is no heating device used . The vein is removed. You are awake during the procedure, the skin is numbed with a local anesthetic and there is no downtime. You can return to work the next day.*

3) SCLEROTHERAPY: This is done for spider veins which a liquid chemical is injected directly into the vein causing it to close off and fade away. You may need several sessions spaced a few weeks apart to achieve optimal results. After the treatment, the leg is wrapped with an elastic bandage to help healing and swelling. ( see video below)

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?After a treatment you can have some mild swelling, bruising, skin discoloration and some discomfort or tenderness.*

HOW DO I GET AN EVALUATION? At our office we will see if your insurance plan will cover the necessary treatment. We will first perform a diagnostic Ultrasound. This is a non invasive pain free way to view the valves in the legs, you will meet with the physician who will then perform a physical exam. We will then discuss treatment options best available for your specific needs.*
