Thermage Body Shape, a non-injectable way to "melt fat" is also available at our office What Is Lipodissolve? Lipodissolve is a non-surgical treatment to transform unwanted fat into a liquid form that can be easily removed. Unlike liposuction, where fat is suctioned out of the body, Lipodissolve allows fat to be eliminated through the patient’s bodily functions. Lipodissolve consists of a series of injections using PCDC (phosphatidylcholine/sodium deoxycholate), a natural fat emulsifer, into the fatty tissue which breaks down the fat, allowing it to be eliminated by the body. Lipodissolve is not intended for weight loss and works best in conjunction with both a sensible diet and routine exercise.
What Areas Can Be Treated? Lipodissolve can be used on almost any area of the body that carries a small, but stubborn fat deposit. The treatment is often used to diminish the appearance of a double chin and jowls, to remove underarm fat, or to decrease the width of your waist, sometimes by several inches. Other treated areas include "love handles", thighs, hips, fatty bulges on the upper and lower back. Lipodissolve functions as both a method for removing fat deposits that remain unaffected by diet and exercise.
How is the
Treatment Performed? The
Lipodissolve treatment consists of a series of injections (8-10 per
area) using a very fine needle (about the size of an acupuncture
needle) that convert the fat in a small, targeted area to a liquid
form. It does this by breaking down the bonds that connect the fat
molecules to one another without damaging any of the surrounding
body tissue. The body then filters out the fat naturally over the
course of a few weeks. What are other alternatives to lipodissolve or if I'm afraid of needles? See Thermage Body Shape. How many
treatments are needed?
The majority
of patients require 3- 4 treatment sessions to achieve their desired
results. Results are usually apparent after 4 weeks. Treatments are
usually spaced at 4-6 week intervals. What is Expected After a Treatment? A typical treatment can be performed in 10-20 minutes. Immediately after treatment the treated area will exhibit itching, redness, and swelling that will persist for up to one or two weeks. Maximal swelling will occur within 24 to 48 hours. The presence of this inflammation is crucial to the overall success of the treatment. It is not uncommon to experience a slight burning sensation around the treated area for about an hour after the injections Bruising can lasts several days to 2 weeks. Some patients
opt to take part of the day off and take over-the-counter or
prescription pain medication. Some patients simply ignore the
discomfort and go right back to work. A minority of patients who
undergo Lipodissolve treatment experience nausea, or dizziness, and
it is difficult to predict who will experience these effects. You
should probably refrain from any strenuous exercise on the day you
receive your injections and stick to gentle exercises for about a
week following the treatment. Results are gradual and usually
apparent after 4 weeks. You can loose up to 1 inch around the
abdomen per session. Am I a
Candidate? Patients cannot undergo
injections if they are currently pregnant or breast feeding, have a
known allergy or hypersensitivity to Lecithin or Soy, have an active
infection in the intended treatment area, are undergoing
immunosuppressive therapy, or suffer from the following medical
conditions: HIV, hepatitis, cancer, liver disease, kidney disease,
bleeding disorders, diabetes, or thyroid disorders. Patients who
smoke must refrain from cigarettes a minimum of 1 week before and 1
week after the treatment. Ideal candidates must have a BMI
(Body Mass Index) BELOW 28. What are
the Possible Risks and Benefits?
The
Lipodissolve treatment has many benefits and few risks, but risks do
exist. To date, the procedure has a very good safety record with no
reported instances of permanent complications. Side effects such as
lumps, bruising, and skin tenderness may occur at the sites of
injection, but these are temporary and generally subside within a
few days. Is it Safe? Lipodissolve is a relatively new cosmetic treatment in the United States, although it’s been used to treat European patients since the 80s. Lipodissolve is still in the process of being studied and reviewed for approval by the FDA. PCDC is compounded by state-licensed compounding pharmacies that dispense the product upon prescription from the physician for use in treatment of a specific patient The 2 components of Lipodissolve (PC/DC):
